The most important categories of Hungarian songs are the hallgató, the andalgó, the csárdás, and the friss csárdás. Besides, the categories verbunkos and ugrós appear sometimes in the repertoire of the urban gypsy orchestras as well. The category "hybrid" is used for melodies of a mixed character.

Hungarian songs are usually performed in groups, medleys, which are called nótacsokor (bouquet of songs). A bouquet, usually starts with one or two hallgató-s, followed by one or two andalgó-s, followed by one or two csárdás-es, and is closed by a friss csárdás. Another popular structure of a bouquet is built of only csárdás-es and one friss csárdás.
