The Hungarian music in this database consists of two main classes: the magyar nóta (Hungarian Songs) and the magyar népzene (Hungarian folk music). Hungarian songs do not belong to the Hungarian folk music, because they have been composed by (usually) known composers based on texts by known poets. However, this music has much in common with folk music (népzene), as it is also very traditional, is usually played by heart, is well known by many Hungarian people, and so on. Therefore, it is sometimes called "folkish music" (népies zene). Gypsy orchestras in the Hungarian cities, not only play Hungarian songs, but also some generally known folk melodies. For this reason under "Locality" not only the entry "Urban/Magyar nóta", but also "General traditional" is used. Information about songs has been taken from several sources, like LPs, CDs, songbooks, etcetera. Important information about song texts and composers was found in the following books.

[2] Gulyás Sándor (2002). Mégis szól a magyarnóta [Yet speaks the Hungarian song].
