Originally this was a recruitment dance in which young men could show their power. Later, in the 19th century, this type of music became so popular, that musicians began to compose such type of music. Both rural and urban gypsy orchestras kept the genre in their repertories.

To this category I reckon also more or less related music from the first half of the 19th century, for example the palotás.
